I'm sure by now our preschoolers are thinking the definition of Michigan is SNOW!!!
Here we are Tuesday February 19, and we find ourselves with another snow day.
Here are a few more ideas to do while we patiently wait for the sun to shine!
WAVE BOTTLE
Clean empty 16 ounce soda bottle with cap
Water
Food coloring
Glitter, sequins, or beads
Baby Oil
Quick bonding glue
Fill the clean soda bottle with water to about one-third full. Add a few drops of food coloring and glitter, sequins, or beads, then fill the rest of the bottle with baby oil. Glue the cap securely on to the bottle by applying the glue to the inside of the bottle cap and screwing it on. Your child will enjoy gently shaking the bottle to produce beautiful waves.
ICE CUBE BAGS
Ice cube tray
Water
Red, yellow, and blue food coloring
3 ziploc bags
Mix water and food coloring (enough for two ice cubes of each color) and pour into an ice cube tray. When frozen, place a red and a yellow ice cube into one ziploc bag, a red and blue cube in a second bag, and a yellow and blue cube into the third bag. Younger children will enjoy moving the ice cubes around in the bags, while older children will enjoy watching what happens when the two colors melt together.

DON'T FORGET OUR VALENTINE PARTY ON WEDNESDAY!
I can't remember the last time we've had a year with so many snow days!!!!
So, I would have reminded you today at school to bring your valentine cards on Weds. but since it is yet ANOTHER SNOW DAY TODAY, I will post it here!
Today we were to make bags to hold our cards...now we will have to do that during free choice time on Weds.
Well, try to stay warm today, OH....and remind all your friends and neighbors to come to our open house on Tuesday evening from 6-7:30 p.m. to check us out and sign up for next year.

play dough and pennies
What do play dough and pennies have in common besides both of them starting with our zoo phonics letter "pee wee Penguin"?
Well, they can help pass some of those long hours cooped up in the house due to all these snow days here in Holland Michigan!
Children love play dough and I have a great recipe that is easy, crumbles less, and lasts longer than the stuff you purchase at the store.
You and your child could make it together, and it will give them hours of fun at the kitchen table.
Play dough is great for building dexterity needed for fine motor development. Toothpicks are great to use with the play dough, just another small way of building the fine motor skills.
Recipe:
1 CUP FLOUR
1 CUP WATER
1/2 CUP SALT
1 TBSP. COOKING OIL
2 TSP. CREAM OF TARTER
FOOD COLORING (USE TO DESIRED COLOR)
MIX ALL DRY INGREDIENTS, THEN ADD WET. COOK 3 MINUTES STIRRING CONTINUALLY UNTIL THE DOUGH FORMS A BALL AND PULLS AWAY FROM THE SIDES OF THE PAN. KNEAD UNTIL SMOOTH. STORE IN A ZIP LOCK BAG.
Now for the pennies......I have found when I put pennies in our rice table the students are thrilled to hunt for these treasures and love to see how many they can collect.
At home hide pennies and send your child on a treasure hunt. Picking up pennies off a flat surface is great for muscle development and once they have collected them, counting to see how many they have is a wonderful math activity,( a side note: be sure you know how many pennies you have placed around your house, especially if you have toddlers).
You could take it a step further and have them go to the store and see what their pennies could buy.
There are a lot of things in your home that make great educational games for your child, and you don't have to spend much to have fun with your child!
Hopefully our snow days are winding down, but if not, I'll see what I can do to come up with some more helpful hints to enjoy the "inside time" with your child.

Teddy Bear Picnic
If you have ever read the book "Teddy Bear Picnic" or perhaps sang the song, you know the fun the little bears had going off in the woods to enjoy a picnic celebration.
Today we took our teddy bears on just such an adventure! After we made our own picnic baskets, we loaded them up, grabbed our bears and blankets and headed off for our very own imaginary teddy bear picnic!
It was a nice break in the middle of winter to make believe we were out in the woods enjoying a picnic!
Year after year at Cherry Lane we go on our teddy bear picnic, it is one of my favorite events!
Check out the pictures to catch a glimpse of our make believe woods!
